Overview
Paperly is a Google Docs Add-on built by Presdin Works LLC. We take a minimal approach to data: we collect as little as possible and we do not store your document content.
What permissions Paperly requests
Paperly requests two Google Docs permissions:
- Read document content — required to run formatting checks, AI rubric review, and plagiarism scans.
- Modify document content — required to add yellow highlights to flagged issues and to apply auto-fixes.
No other Google permissions are requested or used.
Live Formatting Checks
Formatting checks run entirely client-side inside the Google Docs sidebar. Your document text is processed locally in the browser. No data is sent to our servers for this feature. No login is required.
AI Rubric Check and Plagiarism Scan
These features require credits and send your document text to our backend:
- Document text is transmitted over HTTPS to a Google Cloud Run server.
- Text is processed to perform the requested check and then discarded. We do not store your document content.
- For plagiarism checks, text is compared against public academic databases (OpenAlex, CrossRef, arXiv). It is not shared in a way that makes your document publicly accessible.
Personal information
We do not collect your name, email address, or any personally identifiable information beyond what Google provides through the Add-on authorization flow (a Google user ID used to validate credits). We do not sell or share this with third parties.
Third-party services
The following third-party services are used by Paperly:
- Anthropic Claude API — used to process AI Rubric Check requests. Document text is sent to Anthropic's API and subject to Anthropic's privacy policy.
- OpenAlex, CrossRef, arXiv — public academic databases queried for plagiarism matching.
- Google Cloud Run — backend infrastructure for processing AI and plagiarism checks.
Data retention
Document text is not stored after processing is complete. Credit transaction records (how many credits were used and when) may be retained for accounting purposes.
